Sac United Younger Tryouts
Draws Largest Turnout of Memory
January 24, 2010 -
Tryouts for Sac United’s U9-U11 Program
and U12-U14 Teams concluded today. Over 400
children from more than 50 zip codes, including
Rescue, Chico, Fiddletown, Dixon, and Yuba City,
participated in pre-tryout clinics and competed
for selection. The club drew upon all of its
coaching resources to staff the largest turnout
of memory, the vast majority of which came from
Sacramento neighborhoods in Elk Grove, Land
Park, Arden-Arcade, East Sacramento, River Park,
Florin, Vintage Park, Fruitridge, Parkway,
Valley Hi, Natomas, Greenhaven, and Carmichael.
U6-U8 Academy Director David Rubio, embarking
upon his 30th Sac United season, stated “This is
a very exciting year at Sac United as the vision
set forth by our Board, Technical Director and
coaching staff is seeing tremendous success.”
Rubio continued, “People are seeing the value
Sac United offers for their children and we are
excited to have that responsibility.”
Technical Director Shawn Blakeman, who along
with Rubio, pitched in to assist with the
sessions, observed that, “the number of families
that embrace the Sac United ‘One Club, One
Love,’ philosophy is growing by leaps and
bounds.”
The club’s investment in coach education and
development of player technical skill has paid
dividends on the pitch, at training and matches.
Program Director Trey Stoddard, who has played
and coached for Sac United since 1993, believes
that, “the players in the younger age groups
represent the club well, while their hard work
and love for the game have created a buzz around
the Program.”
Assistant Director of Teams Jason Drury, whose
continuing education efforts have taken him
behind the scenes at Chelsea FC, Ajax, PSV, and
FC Barcelona, shared his dream that Sac United
will, “one day have a clubhouse and that kids
from all Sacramento neighborhoods will have the
access they need to develop their highest soccer
potential.” In March, Drury will join the rest
of the club’s staff, most of whom are also Sac
United alumni, in a high level coaching clinic
by ACF Fiorentina, the Italian professional club
known for developing talent from within.
In 2010, Sac United will promote soccer
education and identify and develop talent by
conducting open coaching and recreational player
clinics. The Academy, which emphasizes player
fun, confidence building, psychomotor and
coordination, also invites participation by
interested parent coaches. The first two
Wednesday sessions of the Academy, February 3rd
and 10th, 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm, will be open, free
of charge, to non-Sac United U6 and U8 players
who pre-register.
